Usually, international students experience culture shock upon resumption. This can be overwhelming without the required information and support. Don’t beat yourself up. All you need is time to adjust to your new life. When you are done adjusting, you will begin to enjoy your academic experience.

Be Involved Within Your Community

Many activities within your local community can make you heal from being homesick. At times, you end up making friends who will become family. As such, be a part of community development, local festivals, and feasts. Occasionally sit out. It has a therapeutic effect on you. This will also increase your network within the locality. As you well know, no one is an island.

Become Social

Everyone has the tendency of being social. Leverage on your social skills. If you perceive you don’t have social skills, develop one. You cannot develop social skills by being all by yourself. So, when you socialize, you understand your new environment and the people better. One way is to be open to learn and speak the language of the locals. Basically, strive to be open to accepting the people and their culture the way they are.  

Speak Up

This is one easy, yet difficult, way international students overcome culture shock. Speak up in class. Ask questions. When you find yourself in a social gathering speak up. However, speaking up doesn’t entail you saying irrelevant things. Your contributions ought to be valuable. By so doing, you release yourself to people around you.  


Instead of beating yourself up and wondering why you got yourself into a new city, explore the city. You will be able to familiarise yourself with your new home. Within a short period of time, you could figure you’ve found a home far away from home.

Focus on Your Interests

Getting into a new environment could be unsettling. Instead of going into depression, focus on doing things you’re passionate about. Without a doubt, they bring out the creativity in you. Also, your interests open you up to the cultural realities of your new environment. By so doing, it removes your focus from worrying about your new environment.

Stay in Touch

Staying in touch with family and friends renews your energy as an international student. The therapeutic nature of this cannot be overemphasized. You will be able to share your experiences and burdens with them as you settle in. With the advent of technology, you’ll be able to reach out to them anytime and anywhere.

Ask for Help

Be open to asking for help. Make yourself available for counseling if you really need one. At this stage, you have to be honest with yourself.  In case you have reservations against visiting the counseling center, put a call through to the center.
